Thinking of Barcelona is necessarily connected with a certain image, which represents the city. Although in the case of Barcelona there is not one representative building, which works as a symbol, dominating the skyline, as for example, that would be the case in London or Paris. Moreover there are a couple of monuments and areas, which all together form the world-known charm of the city, which was the result of a well implemented process of construction.
But the city is more than that. There is more behind the shiny waterfront, the impressive monuments, beyond the grid of the fancy glamourous streets. There is much more to discover in history. And one of the most interesting parts of Barcelona's history is the topic of the phenomenon of the “Barraquismo”.
This part, hidden by the nowadays face, once revealed can tell an interesting story, which says more about the city than everything else. ![](//4.bp.blogspot.com/-XemqursBSPI/URAI7W1XnaI/AAAAAAAAAPM/Q1ouabLUrAg/s200/IMG_0420.JPG)
That's why in this blog we want to provide an itinerary showing another side of Barcelona. Therefore we need a change in perspective concentrating on places which represent this part of the identity, shifting the point of view from the city centre to areas, which although lying in the periphery of the city not are less important. During our tour from Torre Barro to Carmel, we want to inform about the phenomena of Barraquismo and auto-constructed house, providing an historical outline, explaining the reasons of the process as well as the socio-cultural consequences.
On our way we will illustrate this by different places, search for the tracks of the settlement as well as for remaining structures. We want to experiance this phenomenon, directly getting in touch with the neighbourhoods. Thus, our aim is to show that this topic is much more than just "history". It is a part a Barcelona's everyday life and the identity.
